Dr. Lamia Ben Jamaa's Waqf Legacy: A Gift to the Community
Imagine a world where knowledge is freely available, regardless of wealth or social status. This was the dream behind waqf, a unique charitable tradition in Islam. Dating back to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, himself, waqf allowed people to donate assets, like land or buildings, to fund education and other good works – forever.
This system wasn't just about charity. It democratized access to knowledge, especially religious knowledge, by setting up mosques that doubled as learning centers. Waqf also provided financial support for scholars and teachers, freeing them to dedicate their lives to learning and sharing their wisdom.
This powerful idea fueled a golden age of Islamic civilization. Universities like Al-Azhar in Cairo, funded by waqf, became centers of excellence, attracting students from across the globe. Here, scholars explored not just theology, but also medicine, mathematics, and astronomy, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.
The spirit of waqf lives on today. Dr. Lamia Ben Jamaa, a remarkable Muslim woman who dedicated her life to education in Canada, embodies this tradition.
Arriving from Tunisia, Dr. Ben Jamaa built a distinguished career in engineering and became a Professor at Seneca College. But her true passion extended beyond classrooms. For 35 years, she tirelessly championed the Muslim community in Canada, emphasizing education and women's empowerment.
As a leader in Islamic education, Dr. Ben Jamaa championed access for all. She served as Chairperson of the Managing Board at Olive Grove School and Manager of MAC's Al-Huda Schools.
Tragically, Dr. Ben Jamaa passed away in 2023. But her legacy continues. A significant portion of her estate established a waqf, an endowment fund that will support Muslims seeking education in Canada – forever. This "sadaqa jariya," or ongoing charity, ensures her generosity will benefit generations to come.
Managed according to Islamic principles, this endowment will nurture future Islamic scholars and support all Muslims pursuing knowledge. It's a bridge connecting the rich past of Islamic scholarship to a bright future.
By supporting this waqf, we participate in a legacy of knowledge and generosity. We invest in shaping the minds and souls of future generations.
Dr. Lamia Ben Jamaa's story reminds us that seeking knowledge is a communal responsibility, one that strengthens not only individuals, but the entire Muslim community.
