Celebrating Scarborough Hospital's Dr. Aleem Hussain: Regional Family Physician of the Year

SHN physician Dr. Aleem Hussain has been recognized as one of six Regional Family Physicians of the Year for 2024-25 by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP). This prestigious award is presented by OCFP annually to family physicians across the province who exemplify exceptional care for their patients and contribute to the advancement of family medicine.

Dr. Hussain was awarded for the Central region, where he practices out of his Markham family medicine clinic, providing care for many patients residing nearby in Scarborough. He is a U of T faculty preceptor for the family medicine department at SHN and provides community palliative care through the Palliative Care Community Team (PCCT) at Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities.

“I feel very privileged to serve the same community and hospital I was born into, at SHN Centenary,” said Dr. Hussain, on receiving this award.

Dr. Hussain’s colleagues recognized him for his significant contributions to patient care and community service, which include initiatives like food and nutrition programs, civic engagement initiatives and free medical clinics for the uninsured. Dr. Hussain believes that community service has enriched his ability to practice family medicine, providing him with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those he serves.

His commitment to patient care is matched by his dedication to medical education. As a faculty member at the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and director with the Muslim Medical Association of Canada, he mentors medical students and residents, ensuring that the next generation of physicians are well-prepared to meet the needs of their communities.

SHN is proud to have Dr. Hussain as part of our medical staff team – an esteemed physician whose dedication and impact extend far beyond our hospital walls.
