Canada to match donations to Red Cross for Morocco earthquake relief
Canada has announced a matching fund with the Canadian Red Cross to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of disaster-affected populations in Morocco.
Every donation made by individuals to the Canadian Red Cross from September 8 to 28, 2023, will be matched up to a maximum of $3 million.
“Canada stands with the people of Morocco, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of life and terrible destruction. Canadians believe in helping others in times of crisis, which is why the Government of Canada is joining forces with the Canadian Red Cross to provide life-saving assistance on the ground in Morocco," said Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development.
These funds, raised through the generosity of Canadians, will help the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement deliver life-saving services, such as emergency food and nutrition assistance, the provision of emergency cash and vouchers and necessary water, sanitation and health services, in Morocco.
An additional $2 million will also be allocated to support the immediate needs of those affected by this crisis, bringing the total of Canada’s response to $5 million.
Global Affairs Canada continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with Moroccan authorities and humanitarian partners to assess and respond to evolving needs.
