Scarborough Muslims pledge to raise $100K for hospitals

The Scarborough Muslim Community pledged to raise $100,000 in 2021 to support the Scarborough Hospital Network (SHN) at a recent virtual Family Day event held on Februrary 15th. 

“The hospitals have been facing significant challenges in managing the COVID-19 pandemic response,” says Asad Chowdhury, coordinator of the fund-rasing committee. “In this ongoing second wave, the Scarborough Hospital Network (SHN) has been managing over 25% of the province’s cases.”

“This has put an enormous strain on the hospital’s resources, and while staff are resilient and have adapted, they cannot do it alone – all of us must step forward and support them.”

The Muslim community came together for a virtual event on Family Day and speakers included Toronto Mayor John Tory,  Imam Dr. Hamid Slimi, elected representatives, Imams, respected community leaders, and youths. Since 2012,  the Muslim community have been organizing this Family Day event with the aim to raise funds for SHN Foundation.  A recording of this year’s  event is posted at www.scarboroughmuslims.com. 

“It was such pleasure to join on Family Day to support the Scarborough Health Network,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory. “The generosity and spirit of our Muslim community is always admirable.”

“I joined Scarborough Muslims for their Family Day event to support Scarborough Health Network,” said Provincial NDP MPP Doly Begum. “As we fight COVID-19, we know how important these efforts for the health and safety of everyone in Scarborough are. I am proud of all the organizations and community leaders who have come forward to support our healthcare system in Scarborough.”

Asad Chowdhury lauded the community for their generosity over the years.

“The Scarborough Muslim Community has always been generous and helped SHN meet these challenges head on,” he said. “We made a commitment in January 2018 to raise $250,000 and through the generosity of our community, we have fulfilled this pledge.”
