Kingston City Hall illuminated green for launch of Islamic History Month

Kingston City Hall and Confederation Basin were illuminated in green on Friday, October 1 for the launch of Islamic History Month 2021.

“Thank you to the City of Kingston for proclaiming Islamic History Month in Kingston for the 15th year in a row. Kingston is one of the few communities to make this proclamation since the inception of IHM,” said the organizers of Kingston’s Islamic History Month celebrations.

“Green is used in the flags and national emblems of several nations where Islamic residents are in the majority because the prophet Muhammad is said to have worn a green cloak and turban,” said the City of Kingston in an announcement to mark the beginning of the month. “Islamic History Month Canada provides a time to focus on celebrating and educating the Muslim and non-Muslim community on the rich history, heritage, and culture of Canadian Muslims and Muslims around the world.”

In a statement, Canadian Heritage wrote:

Proclaimed by Parliament in 2007, this month recognizes the significant role that Muslim communities play in Canadian society and highlights their extraordinary contributions.

Canadians have an opportunity this month to learn more about the history of Islam in Canada and recognize the many achievements of Muslim Canadians in the arts, sports, academics, sciences, literature and their communities. It is also a time to acknowledge the ongoing challenges and barriers that Muslim Canadians face. This year has been difficult for Muslim communities across Canada, as we saw the horrific results of racism and hate.

Together, we must combat all forms of discrimination, Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence directed at Muslim communities across the country. This month is a time to continue working toward a compassionate, inclusive and safer Canada for everyone. Happy Canadian Islamic History Month!

Across the country, school boards, public institutions and Muslim mosques and organizations will be holding events to mark the month. Due to the pandemic, many of the events have moved online. The 2021 IHMC theme is Anti-Indigenous Racism and Islamophobia: Coming Together for a Month of Healing.
