CivicMuslims join Earth Day tree planting at Rattray Marsh

(May 3, 2015) – CivicMuslims volunteers took part in a community tree planting on April 25th at Rattray Marsh in Mississauga to mark Earth Day’s 45th anniversary.

“The invasive emerald ash borer beetle is killing Rattray Marsh’s ash trees,” states the Credit Valley Conservation on their website.

The tree planting is “help the forest at Rattray Marsh recover.”

CivicMuslims is diverse group of young Canadian Muslims with a passion for volunteerism and civic engagement.

“Our hope is to promote public participation with community organizations to foster good citizenship and encourage healthy communities,” states CivicMuslims.

Rattray Marsh is an environmentally significant Great Lakes coastal marsh within the City of Mississauga.

The area immediately surrounding Rattray Marsh has been heavily impacted by urbanization and represents numerous challenges with regard to managing the property and the land surrounding it.

Rattray Marsh offers a rare natural cobble beach on 90 acres of Lake Ontario shoreline in Mississauga.

As the last remaining lakefront marsh between Toronto and Burlington, this environmentally-sensitive wetland offers a unique urban experience for nature lovers.

As part of the Lake Ontario’s Waterfront Trail, this area has an extensive boardwalk and is accessible to all levels of experience.

Walkers can enjoy the spring trilliums, native and migrating birds and waterfront view in the heart of the city.

A CivicMuslims team will be participating in Ride for Heart, Toronto’s iconic bicycle charity event in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, on Sunday May 31st.
