American Muslim Leader Aminah Assilmi dies in accident
(March 5, 2010) – Aminah Assilmi, an American Muslim community activist, scholar and leader died early this morning while returning from a speaking engagement in New York.
Aminah Assilmi and her son were in single car accident just outside of Newport, Tennessee where she had been living for just over a year.
The car accident happened just after 3am and it appears that Assilmi was killed instantly.
“To God we belong and to Him we return,” said CAIR National Board Chairman State Senator Larry Shaw (NC). “We ask God to shower His mercy on Sister Aminah and to grant her loved ones strength and patience in this time of sorrow.”
Assilmi who was 65, served as the Director of the International Union of Muslim Women.
She was an internationally-respected author, an advocate for women’s rights and a renowned speaker on Islam.
Despite health issues, Aminah Assilmi maintained a rigorous schedule of speaking engagements around the nation and the world.
She was instrumental in the U.S. Postal Service’s 2001 issuing of the “Eid” stamp, which marks the two main Muslim holidays.
Her current project included a Center for Muslim Women’s Studies that would serve as a resource center for new Muslims and as a summer camp for Muslim children.
Aminah Assilmi is survived by her daughter Amber, and sons, Whitney and Mohammad as well as several grandchildren.

Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ileihi Rajiouun
Rahimaha Allah
I knew her, she was a great person, First I discovered her and her wonderful story
Then I asked her to be in a documentary on muslim women activists, Her voice seemed to me coming from Paradise.
Rahimaha Allah, we have to continue her work.
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Illayhi Rajioon. To Allah (swt) we belong and to Him is our return. May Allah (swt) grant our dear friend Sister Aminah with Jannat-al-Firdous.
She was a wonderful guide for Muslim women everywhere. We must continue her work by educating others about what she taught us (for ex., Islam’s liberation of women on youtube): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSHZepZhy_0&feature=related
We must also continue her work by donating whatever we can to her organization of the International Union of Muslim Women through the website at IUMW.org to complete the projects she began and could not finish. As our mentor, I am sure she would have wanted this.
May Allah put his mercy on her!
she was an effective speaker mashalla on both male and females. By no doubt, she was the greatest example of a successful converted muslim may Allah enter her & her son paradise!

May Allaah Subhanahoo Wa Taãla the Almighty bestow His Mercy on Her
I’m really sorry to hear she passed away too soon. But if she was so important to the Muslim community why was she homeless and in horrible financial constraints? Don’t you guys take care of your own? Why wan’t her son or other children taking care of her financially? This is very confusing.
Inalillah waina illahi rajiun, May Allah bestow his mercy on her. To his children Your Mother was an angle who Allah sent to share the Qoran with the world. May Allah keep u guys and your family strong. A muslim world lost One of Alla’s greatest messenger.
innalillahi wa inna illahi rajoon.MAY ALLAHU SWT IN HIS INFINATE MERCY GRANT HER ALJANNATUL FILDAUSI ALLAHUMMA AMIN.
Assalama allikom wa rahmato allah wa barakto
When I newly converted I followed Aminah and her wonderful words of advice. She was a pure soul insha’allah I pray that Allah SWT grant her into paradise.
A great source of INSPIRATION has passed away. Inna liLLAHe wa inn ileHe rajeoon. This must be part of the great plan of the MASTER PLANNER.
May Allah Bless this Ummah with some more Aminahs (ameen). May Allah Reward her with best of His rewards in Jannah
Inna lillahi wa inaa ileehi raji’uun. may allah grant her Jannatul ulyaa. ammeen.
I knew Aminah well, and consider her son a brother in a sense. I am not of the same religion, but have known her all my life, and have a massive amount of respect to her as she was a kind, strong woman who spoke uncountable beautiful words with pure meanings and great magnificence, and influenced many more with her great wisdom and knowledge. You have touched my soul, and and will be forever loved.
I’m deeply grieved and saddened at the death of Aminah Assilmi, an illustrous daughter of Islam and pray to Allah to accommodate her in one of the finest gardens of Paradise. Amen! M.S.Ansari
