E coli beef recall includes some Halal products

Some Halal beef products are among the products that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is asking the public to check in their freezers as a country-wide recall due to possible E.coli contamination affects a growing number of brands.

Among the products listed are the following Halal products:

Maple Lodge Farms Halal Beef Burgers 4.54 kg (UPC: 6 20437 05121 7);

Zabiha Halal Beef Burgers 907 g (UPC: 0 67714 00672 8);

Hero Certified Burgers Angus Beef Burgers, 8 oz (Brand: 55321);

Hero Certified Burgers Angus Beef Burgers, 4 oz (Brand: 55322);

and Hero Certified Burgers Angus Beef Burgers, 6 oz (Brand: 55323).

The agency says all the products — most of them frozen beef burgers — were distributed nationally to retail stores, restaurants, and institutional establishments, and were manufactured between July 1, 2011 and February 15, 2012.

In addition to their brand names and codes, the affected products listed can be identified by the Establishment number that appears on the packages, cartons or cases. The products made at this facility bear Establishment number (EST) 761.

There has been one reported illness associated with the consumption of one of the affected products.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled.

According to CFIA’s news release the “Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
